East Fork Bitterroot River Fishing Report
Updated: April 13, 2025
Spring has settled into the East Fork, and the river is waking up in a big way. Flows are bumping a bit with low-elevation melt, but clarity has remained solid most days—especially early in the morning. The fish are moving into their spring lies, and dry fly windows are opening up with warmer afternoons.
Current Conditions:
-
Flows: Steady with slight daily bumps
-
Water Clarity: 2–3 feet and green
-
Water Temp: Mid-40s to low-50s depending on the time of day
-
Weather: Mornings are chilly but afternoons are warming up nicely
What’s Working:
-
Dry Flies: March Browns are starting to show, and the fish are looking up on overcast days. Skwala action is still happening in spots, especially on warmer afternoons—focus on softer edges, inside bends, and woody banks.
-
Top Patterns: Bullethead Skwala, Purple Haze #12–14, Para-March Brown, Film Critic BWO
-
-
Nymphs: Double nymph rigs are producing when the dry fly bite is quiet. Stonefly nymphs and small mayfly patterns under a chubby or small indicator are a safe bet.
-
Top Patterns: Pat’s Rubber Legs (black/brown), CDC Pheasant Tail, Tungsten Micro May, San Juan Worm after rain
-
-
Streamers: With a little color in the water, streamer fishing has picked up. Work the buckets and structure with slow retrieves.
-
Top Patterns: Sparkle Minnow, Mini Dungeon, Thin Mint Bugger
-
Tips from the Boat:
-
Don’t overlook the slow stuff. Fish are holding in softer water until the flows stabilize.
-
The dry fly game is about timing—midday to late afternoon has been best, especially when clouds roll in.
-
Be stealthy on foot. Low clear mornings require a light touch and longer casts.
Looking Ahead:
With more mild weather in the forecast and snowpack holding strong up high, the East Fork should fish well through April. Expect to see more consistent BWO and March Brown hatches in the coming weeks. Keep a lookout for the first wave of caddis near the end of the month if things stay warm.
