July 12th Clark Fork Fishing Report

The Clark Fork River is fishing well as summer conditions settle in across western Montana. Water levels have dropped into excellent shape, clarity is good, and trout are feeding consistently throughout the river. From Missoula downstream, anglers are finding steady action during the cooler morning hours, with another productive window developing in the evening.

Dry fly fishing continues to improve each week. Golden Stones are still producing fish along faster banks and riffles, while PMDs, Yellow Sallies, and evening caddis hatches are keeping trout looking up. Terrestrial fishing is also gaining momentum, with hoppers, ants, and beetles becoming increasingly effective along grassy banks and undercut edges.

A dry-dropper rig remains one of the best ways to cover water on the Clark Fork. Fish a Chubby Chernobyl or Water Walker with a small Perdigon, Jig Pheasant Tail, or Hare's Ear suspended below. Target riffles, seams, boulder gardens, and shaded cutbanks where trout are holding in moderate current.

As water temperatures rise through the afternoon, fishing slows somewhat, but anglers can continue to find success by nymphing deeper runs and pockets. Streamer fishing during the first and last few hours of daylight can also produce some of the river's larger brown trout.
