The Clark Fork is steadily improving as runoff conditions begin to ease across western Montana. While flows remain above normal for early June, visibility has improved throughout much of the river, and anglers are finding success by targeting softer water along banks, back eddies, side channels, and slower seams. Water temperatures continue to rise and fish are becoming increasingly active as conditions stabilize.
Current Conditions
The upper Clark Fork and sections above Missoula are clearing first, while downstream reaches continue to carry additional volume and color. Floating remains the preferred way to access productive water, though opportunities for wade anglers continue to improve each day.
Salmon Flies and Golden Stones are beginning to make appearances throughout portions of the river, with fish showing increased interest in large dry flies during the warmest parts of the day. Green Drakes, PMDs, caddis, and Blue Winged Olives are also contributing to improving surface activity.

Guide's Tip
The most productive water continues to be along the edges. Fish are holding tight to softer current breaks where they can feed efficiently without expending unnecessary energy. A large stonefly nymph under an indicator or a dry-dropper setup featuring a Salmon Fly imitation can be extremely effective throughout the day.
Outlook
Conditions on the Clark Fork should continue to improve over the next several weeks as flows gradually drop and water clarity increases. The developing stonefly hatch is creating exciting opportunities for anglers looking to throw large dry flies, and prospects for excellent summer fishing are shaping up nicely.
