June 29th Bitterroot Fishing Report

The Bitterroot River is settling into excellent early summer fishing conditions. Flows are coming up with the recent rain showers, water clarity is very good, and trout are spreading into classic summer holding water. The upper river is fishing especially well, while the middle and lower sections continue to improve each day as flows stabilize.

Dry fly fishing has become increasingly consistent. Golden Stoneflies are now the primary attraction, with plenty of Caddis, PMDs, Yellow Sallies, and a few lingering Salmonflies depending on the section of river. During the heat of the afternoon, don't overlook terrestrials along grassy banks, especially if you find fish tucked tight to the edges.

Nymph anglers are finding success with Golden Stonefly patterns, PMD nymphs, Pheasant Tails, Hare's Ears, Perdigons, and small attractor nymphs. Fish are holding along seam lines, riffle drop-offs, undercut banks, and softer water adjacent to faster currents. Streamers are producing some larger fish early in the morning and during overcast periods.

Current Recommended Flies:

  • Chubby Chernobyl (Golden Stone)
  • Water Walker
  • Pat's Rubber Legs
  • PMD Sparkle Dun
  • X-Caddis
  • Elk Hair Caddis
  • Purple Haze
  • Parachute Adams
  • Jigged Pheasant Tail
  • Spanish Bullet
  • Frenchie
  • Thin Mint or Mini Dungeon Streamers

The best fishing has been from mid-morning through the evening hatch, with excellent opportunities for anglers floating the river. Early mornings continue to provide productive streamer fishing before the dry fly activity picks up.

With stable weather and improving conditions, the Bitterroot should continue to fish exceptionally well over the coming week. If you're planning a guided trip, now is one of the best times of the season to experience consistent dry fly fishing across the valley.

River Conditions

  • Water Clarity: Good to Excellent
  • Water Temperature: Cold and healthy for trout
  • Fishing Quality: Good to Excellent
  • Best Techniques: Dry-dropper rigs, dry flies, nymphing, and early morning streamers
