July 12th Bitterroot Fishing Report

The Bitterroot River is in excellent midsummer shape and continues to provide some of the best dry fly fishing in western Montana. Water clarity is very good throughout the valley, and while recent showers have caused slight fluctuations in flows, fishing remains productive from the East Fork all the way to the confluence with the Clark Fork.

Early mornings have been the most productive as cooler water temperatures keep trout actively feeding. Golden Stones are still bringing fish to the surface along grassy banks, while PMDs, Yellow Sallies, and evening caddis hatches are providing consistent dry fly opportunities. Hopper fishing is beginning to improve each day, and foam attractor patterns paired with a dropper continue to be one of the most effective ways to cover water.

Anglers floating the river should focus on grassy banks, side channels, riffles, and softer seams where trout can feed comfortably out of the heavier current. Fish willing to eat on top are often found tucked tight to the bank, especially during the first few hours of daylight. As the afternoon warms, nymphing deeper runs and shaded pockets with smaller jig patterns will continue to produce steady action.

Recommended Dry Flies

  • Chubby Chernobyl
  • Water Walker
  • Golden Stone
  • PMD Sparkle Dun
  • Elk Hair Caddis
  • Yellow Sally
  • Parachute Adams
  • Morrish Hopper
  • Flying Ant

Recommended Nymphs

  • Jig Perdigon
  • Jig Pheasant Tail
  • Jig Hare's Ear
  • Pat's Rubber Legs
  • Frenchie

Streamer fishing can also be productive during the low-light hours of the morning and evening. Olive, black, and white streamers stripped along cutbanks and woody structure can move some of the river's larger brown trout.

With warm summer temperatures settling into the Bitterroot Valley, we encourage anglers to get an early start, fish during the coolest part of the day, and handle trout carefully before releasing them.

Now is one of our favorite times of the year to fish the Bitterroot. Beautiful weather, eager trout, and excellent dry fly opportunities make for outstanding days on the water.
