June 29th West Fork Fishing Report

West Fork Bitterroot River Fishing Report – June 29, 2025

Current Conditions:

The West Fork is fishing very well and running at an ideal mid-summer level. Flows have dropped significantly and are holding steady, creating excellent clarity and perfect dry fly water. Fish are spread out and feeding actively throughout the day.

  • West Fork Gauge near Painted Rocks: ~175 CFS

  • Visibility: 3–4 feet and improving

  • Water Temp: Upper 40s to low 50s°F in the mornings

Hatches & Flies:

It’s a golden stone party on the West Fork right now, with fish keyed in on big bugs from mid-morning through late afternoon. There are also strong PMD and Green Drake hatches depending on the stretch and time of day.

  • Golden Stones (#8–10): Most productive from 10 a.m.–3 p.m.

    • Top Patterns: Chubby Chernobyl (tan, purple, gold), Water Walker, Plan B Stone

  • PMDs (#14–18): Strong in the mid-morning to early afternoon

    • Top Patterns: Split Case PMD, Purple Haze, CDC Thorax Dun

  • Green Drakes (#10–12): Still coming off mid-river and above

    • Top Patterns: Extended Body Drake, Adams Wulff, Green ParaDun

  • Caddis (#16–18): Spotty but effective in slower water in the evening

    • Top Patterns: Tan X-Caddis, CDC Caddis

Tactics & Tips:

Now is the time to throw big dries tight to the bank and let them drift naturally. Fish are holding in classic summer lies—along the seams, undercuts, and drop-offs. A well-placed Chubby will get crushed. Try a dropper in deeper buckets with a small tungsten mayfly or caddis nymph.

If the dry bite slows, nymphing with a two-fly rig under an indicator—especially in the deeper slots—will produce. A golden stone nymph paired with a small PT or Frenchie is a reliable setup.

Guide’s Note:
The West Fork is one of the most consistent dry fly stretches in Montana right now. With water levels stabilizing and hatch activity peaking, we’re seeing quality fish eat dries all day long. Don’t sleep on this window—it’s the kind of fishing we wait all year for.
