West Fork Bitterroot River Fishing Report – June 20, 2025
Flows: ~250 CFS at Painted Rocks
Water Temp: Mid 50s
Clarity: Good, with light stain—ideal for fishing
Weather: Warming trend with afternoon thunderstorms possible
The West Fork is shaping up beautifully with steady drop in flows and improving clarity. The river is in that prime early summer window, and fish are looking up. Golden stoneflies are in full swing, and you’ll find consistent dry fly action throughout the day, especially along the edges, riffles, and pocket water.
Mornings have been productive with smaller attractor dries (think Chubby Chernobyls in size 10–12), followed by explosive takes on golden stone dries as things warm up. Don't overlook the afternoon mayfly hatches either—PMDs and some Green Drakes are making appearances on cloudy afternoons.
If fish aren't responding on top, drop a rubberlegs or tungsten jig off your dry and run it tight to structure. Expect aggressive strikes from browns and rainbows in that faster pocket water. Side channels and soft seams are holding fish and are definitely worth exploring.
Hot Flies:
-
Golden Chubby Chernobyl #10–12
-
Tan Water Walker #10
-
PMD Comparadun #14–16
-
Green Drake Parachute #12
-
Rubberlegs (Black/Brown) #8
-
Frenchie Jig Nymphs #14
Tips:
-
Fish are spread out—cover water and don’t spend too long in one spot.
-
Stay stealthy in the side channels; clear water means spooky trout.
-
Afternoons can get gusty—bring a heavier leader for wind-resistant dries.
