June 7th East Fork of the Bitterroot Fishing Report

East Fork Bitterroot River Fishing Report

Updated: June 7, 2025

The East Fork is shaping up nicely as runoff continues to taper. Current flows are holding steady around 425 CFS near Sula and slowly dropping, making for improving wade and float conditions. While still slightly pushy in spots, side channels are opening up and providing some excellent opportunities.

Fishing Outlook

Fish are starting to look up consistently, especially in the afternoons. Dry fly fishing is becoming more productive each day as water clarity improves. Look for active trout near soft seams, behind structure, and in the edges of slower water.

Hatches & Flies

The bugs are here and the fish are ready!

  • Golden Stoneflies are beginning to show in the lower sections and will continue pushing upriver as water warms. A golden chubby or stimulator can bring up aggressive takes.

  • Yellow Sallies are fluttering along the banks and riffles—smaller dries like a #16-18 Yellow Stimi or Halfdown will do the trick.

  • Caddis are strong in the evenings—look for splashy rises near tailouts and foam pockets.

  • PMDs and some early Green Drakes are starting to pop on the overcast days, especially mid-morning.

Recommended Flies

  • Chubby Chernobyls (tan/gold, purple, or royal) #8-12

  • Yellow Sally dries #14-16

  • CDC Caddis #16-18

  • Parachute PMD or Sparkle Dun #16

  • Pats Rubber Legs (black, brown, or coffee) #8-10

  • Perdigons, Frenchies, or Copper Johns under a dry or solo for nymphing

Pro Tip:

Focus on inside bends, slower seams, and behind logjams where trout can ambush food. The fish are feeding opportunistically—don't be afraid to cover water quickly until you find a pod.
