East Fork Bitterroot River Fishing Report – June 20, 2025
Flows: ~190 CFS and dropping steadily
Water Temp: Low to mid 50s
Clarity: Fair to good—light color but very fishable
Conditions: Early summer prime window
The East Fork is fishing well as runoff continues to ease. Water levels are still up, but fish are pushed to the edges and actively feeding. Expect strong golden stonefly activity throughout the day, with dry fly opportunities heating up from mid-morning into the evening.
The best action has come on large dries fished tight to banks, log jams, and soft seams. Dropper rigs are still a solid choice in the morning, especially in faster water and deeper runs. Don’t hesitate to fish a short leash—trout are feeding high in the column.
As the river continues to drop, expect even more consistent surface eats. Overcast days may bring out scattered PMDs and a few Green Drakes. Keep an eye on foam lines and softer seams for rising fish.
Hot Flies:
-
Golden Chubby Chernobyl #10–12
-
Olive Water Walker #10
-
PMD Sparkle Dun #14–16
-
Green Drake Cripple #12
-
Rubberlegs #8–10
-
Jig Hare’s Ear or Frenchie #14–16
Pro Tips:
-
Focus on inside bends and edge water—fast current in the center is mostly empty.
-
Fish early before the heat or incoming thunderstorms roll through.
-
Bring a wading staff—flows are still pushy in some sections.
