Fall Fly Fishing on the Bitterroot River | Hamilton, Montana
Fall fishing on the Bitterroot River is one of our favorite times of the year. Cooler temperatures, changing leaves, and fewer anglers on the water make October a great time to experience Western Montana fly fishing. The summer crowds have thinned out, and trout are settling into their fall feeding patterns.
Current Fishing Conditions
October brings cooler water temperatures and shorter feeding windows to the Bitterroot River. Trout are transitioning away from summer terrestrial patterns and focusing more on fall aquatic insect activity.
The best fishing generally occurs from late morning through the afternoon, once temperatures begin to warm. There's no need to rush to the river at daylight this time of year. Let things warm up, watch for rising fish, and be ready when the hatch starts.
Look for trout holding in slower riffles, walking-speed runs, deeper buckets, and soft seams. Fish are beginning to concentrate in areas where they can feed efficiently without fighting heavy current.
Dry Fly Fishing – Fall Baetis Are the Main Event
Fall Baetis (Blue-Winged Olives) are a major attraction on the Bitterroot in October. Cloudy, cool days can produce some of the best dry fly opportunities of the season.
When the bugs start coming off, look for trout rising consistently along current seams, foam lines, and softer edges.
Recommended Dry Flies:
-
BWO Sparkle Dun – Sizes 18–22
-
Parachute BWO – Sizes 18–22
-
BWO Comparadun – Sizes 18–22
-
Griffith's Gnat – Sizes 18–22
-
October Caddis – Sizes 10–14
-
Purple Haze – Sizes 16–20
Presentation is especially important during fall hatches. Longer leaders, lighter tippet, and a drag-free drift will help fool selective trout feeding on smaller mayflies.
Nymphing – Consistent Action Between Hatches
When fish aren't rising, nymphing remains a productive way to target trout throughout the day. Focus on deeper riffles, transition water, and slower runs.
Recommended Nymphs:
-
Pheasant Tail – Sizes 16–20
-
Zebra Midge – Sizes 18–22
-
Perdigon Nymphs – Sizes 16–20
-
Two-Bit Hooker – Sizes 16–20
-
Pat's Rubber Legs – Sizes 8–12
-
BWO Emergers – Sizes 18–22
Adjust your depth and weight to keep your flies in the feeding zone. As water temperatures cool, slower presentations often become more effective.
Streamer Fishing – Hunting Fall Browns
October is an excellent time to explore streamer fishing on the Bitterroot. Brown trout become more active during the fall, and larger fish may respond aggressively to well-presented streamers.
Focus on undercut banks, deeper pools, woody structure, and slower edges adjacent to faster current.
Recommended Streamers:
-
Sparkle Minnow – Sizes 4–8
-
Sculpzilla – Sizes 4–8
-
Woolly Bugger – Sizes 4–10
-
Mini Dungeon – Sizes 4–8
Vary your retrieve until you find what works. Short strips with occasional pauses can be especially effective in colder water.
Freestone Fly Shop's Tips for the Week
-
Fish the warmer hours: Late morning through midafternoon is often the most productive window.
-
Watch the weather: Overcast days can create excellent BWO dry fly fishing.
-
Downsize your presentation: Smaller flies, lighter tippet, and longer leaders can make a difference.
-
Cover different water: As temperatures drop, trout may shift into softer, deeper holding areas.
-
Be prepared to change tactics: Carry dry flies, nymphs, and streamers to make the most of changing conditions.
