Conditions:
Runoff is in full swing on the main stem and West Fork, with flows rising and visibility varying day-to-day. While most of the upper and middle Bitterroot is high and off-color, some side channels and the East Fork remain fishable for those willing to work. Expect flows to stay high through late May, with fishable windows opening up as water levels settle.
Effective Tactics:
-
Stick to inside bends, slower seams, and soft edges.
-
Nymphing and streamers are your best bet until clarity improves.
-
Dry fly action will ramp up in early June—mark your calendars.
Hot Flies:
-
Nymphs: Pat’s Rubber Legs (brown, black), Prince Nymph, Olive Hare’s Ear
-
Streamers: Sparkle Minnow (sculpin or black), Mini Dungeon, Home Invader
-
Dries for Clearer Water: Skwala, Tan Chubby, Purple Haze (early evenings)
Forecast:
We’re watching flows closely—early June should bring the first solid dry fly windows, especially on the upper river and West Fork. Big bugs like golden stones and salmonflies aren’t far off.
