Bitterroot River Fishing Report
April 13, 2025
Spring is in full swing on the Bitterroot, and fishing has been solid throughout the system. With warmer daytime temps and longer daylight hours, the river is waking up—and so are the trout.
River Conditions:
-
Flows: Holding steady but fluctuating with snowmelt. Side channels are opening up, especially below Bell Crossing.
-
Clarity: 2–3 feet visibility, mostly green water. Still very fishable.
-
Temperature: Mid-40s in the mornings, climbing into the low 50s by afternoon.
Hatch Report:
-
Skwala Stoneflies are still happening, especially on warmer afternoons. The hatch is tapering off, but fish are still looking up for them.
-
March Browns are showing up in good numbers—expect risers mid-day.
-
BWOs (Blue-Winged Olives) are a daily occurrence, especially on overcast days.
-
Mother’s Day Caddis are just around the corner, so keep your eyes peeled later this week.
What’s Working:
-
Dries: Try a Skwala pattern (size 10–12), a Purple Haze or Parachute Adams in size 14–16 for March Browns and BWOs, or a CDC Caddis emerger if fish are picky.
-
Nymphs: Pheasant Tails, Hare’s Ears, and Jig PTs fished under a chubby or indicator are productive. A rubberlegs stonefly is still a solid lead fly.
-
Streamers: On cloudy afternoons or early mornings, olive or black buggers on a slow strip have moved some nice fish.
Tips:
-
Focus on slower inside seams and tailouts in the morning. As things warm up, look for active feeders in riffles and shallow shelves.
-
Be stealthy—clear water means fish are a little spookier.
-
Take your time and cover water methodically—fish are spread out but eating.
